Music you buy from a record store gives you the right to listen and enjoy it any way you like as long as it is for personal use. Listen at home, in your car, load it into your MP3 player and play it for friends. But, the moment music is used in the context of a business, whether it is from a CD player, the radio, or any other source, you need permission from the copyright owners.

Playing music/message on hold over telephone lines is considered a public performance under United States Copyright Law. For the performance of certain music to be lawful, it must be licensed to the user by the copyright owners or their representatives. As the copyright representatives of all ComSource Audio music/message on hold productions, a license covering the performance over telephone lines is provided for the first year with each production purchased. To ensure your company is properly licensed and protected, an annual invoice for message on hold licensing will be sent per location, beginning one year after the initial production broadcast. ComSource Audio pays all necessary music licensing so your company is fully protected.
